The main research area for MDL is cancer but research projects in diabetes and eye disease have been accomplished as well.

A lot of resources are devoted to the utilization of microarray technology to investigate genomic instability and for classification of cancer patients based on, for example, gene expression or loss of heterozygosity.

Research results are published in major journals as Cancer Research, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Nature Genetics and Diabetes.

Within diabetes MDL is working on the apoptotic process in beta cells, partly funded by the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in the US.

To perform its research, MDL has created significant databases and tissue banks within bladder cancer, colorectal cancer and recently prostate cancer. The largest of these tissue banks now contains more than 45.000 samples.

MDL has established a bioinformatic research group that develops and applies a bioinfomatic platform to research data generated at MDL. The bioinformatic group has tight relations to the Bioinformatic Centre (BiRC) at Aarhus University.
